Wade Cox
Wade Cox, BA (Econ), CLU, CHS, GBA, RPA, CEBS
Principal

Wade has worked in the group life, health and retirement business for 34 years. His experience includes regional group sales management responsibilities for two major insurers in three different provinces. He has worked in Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Wade got his start working in sales of individual insurance products, individual and group retirement/pension products, and employee benefit plans for London Life in Ontario. He progressed to manage the London Life office in Saskatoon and subsequently managed the Canada Life office in Edmonton. As a result he understands the complexities involved in the needs of different employers across the country.

Wade had the distinct opportunity to work through the demutualization of one of the major insurers in Canada in 1999. This happened to several insurers within a short period of time. It involved a massive shift in mindset as a result of the change in ownership from that of policyholders to shareholders. The nature of the market changed. Return on equity suddenly became a much bigger focus. The margins that insurers were including in their pricing became larger. As a member of that company’s Vice-President’s Advisory Council, he became part of the strategic corporate process to increase the viability of that company by increasing their profitability. Since much of the market operates in the same ways as that insurer, Wade has a clear understanding of where extra margins of profit may be eliminated to the advantage of Benefex clients.

Wade’s expertise also extends to employer retirement programs of all kinds. He acts as an advisor to some of our clients for their Group RRSP plans, Defined Contribution Pension Plans and Defined Benefit Pension Plans. He also assists employees with investment decisions for their retirement plans.

Recent services provided by Wade include:

  • Working with both public and private sector employers. He has experience in dealing with bargaining units and out-of-scope employers.
  • Creation of a format for a client to survey its employees regarding plan design and cost satisfaction. Reporting to the client on the results of that survey for the purpose of plan redesign
  • Total redesign of a benefits plan based upon attention to employee focus and productivity
    • Including the implementation of a FLEX account in the redesigned package
  • Benchmarking of a plan to illustrate competitiveness for our client
  • Downsizing of a plan from as many as nine different providers to take advantage of economies of scale for pricing as well as ease of administration and employee claiming processes.
    • Extensive care to detail was necessary to ensure ongoing quality plan design
  • Considerable experience in various funding and pooling arrangements, and how they affect pricing on various benefit lines, including Fully Insured Non-Refund, Refund, Administrative Services Only (ASO), and Self Insurance

  • Almost 35 years of experience with group retirement plans and legislative alterations in various provinces over that time.
    • Has arranged Group RRSP contracts, Deferred Profit Sharing Plan contracts, Defined Benefit Pension Plan contracts, and Individual Pension Plans and has advised clients on appropriate compliance measures for Defined Benefit Pension Plans

Wade joined Benefex as a consultant in 2003 and became a partner in 2004. Our clients benefit from the knowledge Wade has acquired in the areas of plan design, underwriting and ongoing financial management of benefit programs. Because of his analytical persona, effective solutions for our clients are properly implemented.

Brad Seib
Brad Seib, BAdmin
Principal

Brad brings to our clients more than 23 years of experience in the group benefits industry. His career includes roles in various sales and leadership capacities, developing benefits solutions for groups ranging in size from small businesses to large international organizations. His substantial underwriting and plan design knowledge is of significant value in building winning client solutions. Most recently Brad was the Director of the Manulife Financial Group Benefits office in Edmonton.

Brad has acted as lead consultant on employee benefits programs ranging up to several thousand lives. He has been extensively involved in a wide range of projects and services including, but not limited to:

  • Creation and implementation of comprehensive benefits programs from the ground up;
  • Complete plan design review to ensure benefits programs are competitive and include the most current coverages, including benchmarking;
  • Reviewing programs to achieve the most efficient and effective plan administration arrangements and the best possible employee experiences;
  • Extensive experience in various funding and pooling arrangements
  • Comprehensive program marketing
    • Comparison of current and projected costs under various scenarios
    • Identifying and comparing non-financial factors
  • Managing projects to transition plans from one insurer to another;

Brad prides himself in developing long term client relationships where he can apply his passion in developing effective benefits strategies to assist them in meeting their long term business goals. The employee policy manual outlines the expectations of all Carrington employees and should be reviewed. Kyle Stinson
Kyle Stinson, BSc. (Econ), GBA
Principal

Kyle is a Benefex partner with over 10 years of consulting experience. He deals with all aspects of client’s benefits plans including: financial underwriting, plan design, funding arrangements, renewal negotiations, retirement planning, and investment management. Before joining Benefex Kyle managed valuation and consultation assignments on a diverse range of investment grade commercial real estate assets for some of Canada’s largest REIT’s, Pension Funds, and publicly traded companies. He was responsible for annual valuation in excess of $500 million and brings a multi-faceted approach to our consulting work.

He is now responsible for providing consulting services and account management for over 60 clients dealing with all aspects of group insurance, retirement plans, wellness programs, and labor negotiations. His clients range in size from a few employees to several hundred in both the public and private sector

Kyle holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Texas A&M University with a Major in Economics & Finance. He is an active member of the Edmonton Sunrise Rotary Club.

Ehren Cox
Ehren Cox, BComm, GBA, RPA, CEBS
Consultant

Ehren got his start as a Disability Case Manager at Great West Life Assurance Co. There he managed an existing caseload of short-term and long-term disability claims, and was chiefly responsible in developing plans to achieve the full recovery and return-to-work of his claimants.

Ehren transitioned to an Account Executive role with Manulife Financial, initially handling a block of over 600 small business clients in Northern Alberta. In this role Ehren gained multiple years of experience quoting, presenting, administering, and renewing a full range of benefits (including Life, Optional Life, Dependent Life, Accidental Death & Dismemberment, Short Term Disability, Long Term Disability, Extended Health Care, Dental, Critical Illness, and Employee and Family Assistance Programs). In the Small Business role, a large part of his work consisted of being an educator to less knowledgeable benefit consultants and benefit plan clients.

Ehren regularly helped his clients and consultants (advisors) by:

  • Reviewing client plan designs and proposing amendments to ensure plans were competitive in the labor market and maintained acceptable price points.
  • Completing full reviews of plan benefits and presenting the results along with annual renewals
  • Preparing monthly, quarterly, or semi-annual experience reports
  • Developing informative newsletters regarding industry and legislative developments
  • Acting as primary contact regarding all client questions

Due to his years of experience in disability claims management, Ehren developed a reputation as an expert in all matters related to disability and was frequently used as a general resource by his clients for disability and related human resources questions.

Ehren was recognized by Manulife Financial as the #1 Canadian Alpha Account Executive two years in a row, in 2012 and 2013.

Eventually Ehren became the sole Edmonton Account Executive responsible for all Large and Corporate sized New Business in Northern Alberta and the Territories. This gained him additional years of experience in unique products reserved for large business such as: Executive Long Term Disability, Absence Management Services, Short Term Disability Adjudication Services, Health Risk Assessment campaigns, Mental Health Management training, Health Management Services, Drug Formulary programs, Expatriate Solutions, International Solutions, Provincial Plan Replacement, and Trip Cancellation. This market also gave him experience determining appropriate funding methods for various clients and setting benefit rates for Refund Accounted and Self Insured plans.

Ehren is a member of the Edmonton Chapter of Advocis as well as the Canadian Pension & Benefits Institute.

Randy Stinson
Randy Stinson, BA (Honours)
Senior Consultant

Randy has 47 years of experience, on both the Insurance Company and Consultant side of the employee benefits industry. He is primarily involved in helping client’s design and finance employee benefit programs that are efficient, effective and consistent with their organizations objectives and the needs of their employees. He also provides senior resource input and peer review for other Benefex consulting activities. Randy is known for creative thinking and finding innovative solutions to clients’ needs thereby helping them to realize their employee benefit program objectives.

Consulting services of note have included relationships with: University of Alberta, PCL Construction, Royal Alexandra Hospital, Nova Corporation and currently Alberta Innovates – Technology Futures (AITF), Celanese Canada and Genome British Columbia to name a few.

Specific career positions have included Ontario Group Claims Manager for Great West Life, Ontario Group Sales Manager and Western Canada Regional Group Manager for Maritime Life, Consultant, Edmonton Branch Manager and Senior Vice President and Member of the Executive Committee for the Alexander Consulting Group (now AON) and currently a Consultant and Principal of Benefex Consulting Inc.

Projects have included:

  • developing benefit plans for merging corporations,
  • transitioning insurance and retirement programs from federal government plans to private plans for a regional airport authority and,
  • setting up a flexible benefit program for clients and Business and Human Resources Professionals (which is currently used at universities across Alberta and B.C.)

Over the years Randy has taught CEBS Group Insurance and Group Retirement/Pension courses at Humber College locations in Edmonton and Toronto as well as NAIT.

Randy, in partnership with Gerry Maciejko, formed Benefex Consulting Inc. in 2002.
